Missions ....
The Missions Committee of the Church guides the Churches’ support of all missions programs. Each year there are three major missions offering presented by the United Church of Christ. One Great Hour of Sharing is an offering that provides funds by which the UCC can support ongoing programs to help the poor in developing countries to become more self-sufficient. Neighbors In Need is a fund designed to provide funds to support activities to "neighbors" within our country. The Christmas Fund (previously known as Veterans of the Cross) provides funds to help retired pastors or their survivors at Christmas time.
Second Congregational Church also supports the local community. At Thanksgiving and Christmas the members of the congregation donate money, food and presents for families in the local community who are in need. In addition coats are collected and donated to those in need through Stafford Human Services.
Whenever there is a natural disaster, like Hurricane Sandy, our congregation has been willing to give additional funds to assist with relief efforts. Usually these funds are funneled through the UCC since this guarantees that only the smallest amount of the monies go toward administrative costs.
An unusual Mission that is also a fund-raiser are our Rest Stop weekends. Two weekends a year we set up a canopy at the Willington Rest Stop on I-84. We provide free coffee, ice tea, lemonade along with finger foods and hot dogs to the traveling public. We ask for donations to offset the costs and offer part of the proceeds to a charity of significance. In the past we have given a donation to Habitat For Humanity. Recently we have been giving a donation to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Many of the travelers enjoy visiting for a few minutes before getting back on the road.
